5 Surprise Guest Characters That ‘Mortal Kombat 11’ Should Add

These familiar faces have earned the right to mix it up with the core Kombatants of ‘MK11’

Magic usually happens when a popular fighting game series adds a few unexpected guests to the tournament festivities.

Street Fighter’s Akuma unleashed his techniques on Marvel Comics mutants in X-Men: Children of the Atom. The oft-forgotten Squaresoft arena fighter Ehrgeiz featured a slew of fan favorites from Final Fantasy VII. Soulcalibur continually filled out its growing roster with the likes of Kratos from God of War, Link from The Legend of Zelda, and even Star Wars icons such as Darth Vader and Yoda. The entire concept behind Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. franchise revolves around throwing gaming’s most recognizable characters into a brawl for all.

NetherRealm Studios has also gone out of its way to feature comic book, gaming, and movie icons in many of its recent games. Mortal Kombat X blew minds everywhere when it decided to enhance its roster with Xenomorph from Alien, Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th, Predator from The Predator, and Leatherface from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Recent demos of the studio’s upcoming Mortal Kombat 11 present the game as the next evolution in the long-running series that launched in 1992. Along with its fresh mechanics and new faces, hopes are high that Ed Boon and his talented team of developers will shock players with their latest batch of guest characters.

Here are five characters MK11 creators should consider.

1. Spawn

Everyone thought Spawn, Todd McFarlane’s most famous superhero, would appear in MKX. When his inclusion didn’t come to pass, all eyes looked toward the next MK as the best way to bring Spawn back to the forefront of gaming. If Ermac doesn’t get to showcase his green sorcery tricks in MK11, then Image Comics’ undead revenant should take his place and put his own demonic powers on display.

Spawn’s playstyle would be pretty easy to implement into MK11. He’d be able to teleport, and he’d also get to utilize his cloak and chains as weapons for his signature special moves. Seeing as how MK11 has embraced the presence of alternate costumes, Spawn could enter the game in a variety of his finest outfits. Spawn is the perfect candidate for a guest character spot in MK11.

2. Doomguy from ‘Doom’

If the badass demon slayer from Doom can beat back the armies of hell, he can certainly handle the forces of Earthrealm and Outworld. The world-famous Doomguy is already used to buckets of blood and dismembered body parts falling in his path, so he wouldn’t miss a beat as an addition to MK11’s roster. His career resurgence in 2016’s Doom and upcoming return in Doom Eternal has perfectly laid the groundwork for Doomguy’s brutal moves.

So let’s get the obvious out of the way first: Doomguy would most likely be a ranged master. Doom’s large arsenal of firearms offers the character myriad of ways in which he could destroy the opposition. I’d totally be down with seeing him tear into his opponents with the static rifle, super shotgun, heavy assault rifle, and vortex rifle. His Fatalities would make good use of his most powerful weapons, such as the rocket launcher and the highly lauded BFG 9000. Doomguy’s moveset could be rounded out perfectly with a melee loadout that incorporates his chainsaw, crucible blade, or retractable arm blade.

3. Ash Williams from ‘The Evil Dead’

2011’s revival of Mortal Kombat and 2015’s MKX did an awesome job of embracing the world of horror cinema. I’m still blown away by the fact that good ol’ Freddy Krueger found a way to exchange blows with the likes of Scorpion and Sub-Zero. While a lot of fans have called for the likes of It’s Pennywise to make it into MK11, I have another horror movie icon in mind for such a guest spot. Actor Bruce Campbell should go full 3-D once again as Ash Williams in MK11.

Ash handles his dirty work with his iconic sawed-off shotgun and permanent chainsaw add-on. The man is also pretty nifty with a shovel, so he’d work best as an in-your-face type of fighter. Ash is a simple guy who’s not too hard to conceptualize as a fighting-game character. The perfect cherry on top for Ash in MK11 would entail Campbell reprising his vocal duties. His verbal beatdowns would be just as brutal as his chainsaw-assisted ones, that’s for sure.

4. Jackie Estacado from ‘The Darkness’

Mr. Estacado wields the impressive powers of an ancient entity known as “The Darkness.” By tapping into another dimension through the shadows that surround him, Jackie can command the shadowy creatures that bask in the dark. He made waves in two supremely underrated first-person shooters that let Jackie dole out his unique brand of vengeance. I’d get a kick out of watching him do the same in MK11.

Jackie’s approach to combat would be pretty easy to adapt. He’d have no problem calling on the assistance of his trusty Darklings, who are capable of breathing fire and spitting out a gnarly poisonous liquid. The Darkness also has the power to amplify Jackie’s skills as a marksman, which means he’d be able to rip into his foes with his dual-wield submachine guns. The combination of Jackie’s chosen firearms and his utilization of The Darkness is tailor-made for Mortal Kombat.

5. Sara Pezzini from ‘Witchblade’

MK11 could pull off an epic comic book crossover on par with the ones fans were treated to in the Injustice games. There’s a mythical weapon that’s known as the offspring of the aforementioned Darkness and “The Angelus.” That fabled weapon is known as the all-powerful Witchblade. The most popular wielder of the Witchblade is Top Cow Productions’ Sara Pezzini, a woman who’s just as formidable as MK11’s Kitana, Jade, and Skarlet.

Sara could prove to be a supremely formidable foe. She’d have the power to summon all sorts of bladed weapons and even whips at a moment’s notice. Her superhuman strength and pyrokinesis can easily be transformed into some slick-looking special maneuvers. And her adaptive armor is the type of skill that would make for a great mid-match stat booster. The prospect of Sara and her Witchblade doing battle against Jackie and his Darkness sounds compelling.
