'Marvel's Spider-Man 2' on PS5 Release Date: Story, Gameplay, and More

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 on PS5 takes place 10 months after the events of Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Peter and Miles continue their roles as the web-swinging saviors of NYC as they team up to thwart the efforts of some incoming villains that will be making their debut in Insomniac Games' Spidey series. Kraven the Hunter will play a major part in this game as he makes his way to the city with his faction of mercenaries called the "Hunters" in a bid to engage in the greatest hunt of all.

That grand hunt is meant to take down the superpowered "Spider-Men." At some point, Peter will acquire the powers of the "Symbiote" and become stronger than ever. Judging by the story trailers we've seen from this game thus far, Peter's negative change in personality will cause Miles to question his mentor's new approach to crime fighting.

The Lizard is yet another familiar Spidey bad guy who will also pop up to give Peter and Miles a hard time. But the biggest enemy of them all will no doubt be Venom, whose bulking frame, frightening levels of strength, and creepy voice will all be implemented into his video game self. As for returning characters, that collection of familiar faces will include Mary Jane Watson, J. Jonah Jameson, Rio Morales, Ganke Lee, Norman Osborn, Harry Osborn, and Martin Li aka Mister Negative.

Just like the first two games in Insomniac's Spider-Man gaming saga, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 will feature a wide array of suits for both Peter and Miles that are lifted straight from the comic books and films. There will also be a number of suits made exclusively for the game itself. In total, there will be 65 suits to collect in this sequel. A debuting feature called "Suit Styles" will play a huge part in how you utilize those suits as you'll now be able to unlock alternate color shaders for some of them. All in all, over 200 suit color options will be available to you.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 on PS5 is certainly taking advantage of the console's impressive performance and power by featuring an even bigger open-world version of New York to explore. As a matter of fact, this sequel's city locale is nearly double the size of the one seen in its predecessor. That's due to the addition of two other NYC boroughs - Queens and Brooklyn. Just like before, you'll take on all manner of main story objectives, side missions, and tasks associated with picking up a myriad of special collectibles. Swinging around NYC is even better this time around as both Peter and Miles can employ "Web-Wings" to catch more air as they zip through the city skies. Wind tunnels have been put in place to give both Spider-Men a method toward going even faster while they stair airborne. Speaking of everyone's favorite Spider-Men, players will be able to switch between playing as both characters in an instant. It's also worth noting that both characters will get their own set of dedicated story and side missions.

One of the biggest new mechanics that excites Spider-Man fans the most is Peter's new abilities granted to him by the alien parasite known as the Symbiote. Alongside Peter's standard combat tools, the Symbiote provides Peter with a more lethal set of moves that lets him use tendrils to defeat his foes. The famous gadget wheel from the last two Spider-Man games will make its welcome return here - now, new uses have been applied to familiar tools. For example, the "Web-Shooters" can have mods attached to them that help both Spider-Men cast a "Web Line" across pillars for extra footing during stealth sequences while they hang above their enemies. Another new gadget mechanic is the use of the "Web Grabber," which can pull up multiple enemies into an isolated position for simultaneous stealth takedowns of two bad guys at once.
