As you all know, hair care can sometimes be a challenging process to nail down, and like other things in relation to the human body, sometimes issues can arise out of nowhere. One of those issues is, unfortunately, dandruff. According to SingleCare, nearly 50 million people in the United States suffer from some form of scalp discomfort, meaning it’s a lot more common than we think. That’s where Robbie Salter comes into play with Jupiter. The entrepreneur spoke with ONE37pm’s Phil Toronto about how he is navigating through the world of business.

To understand how Salter got to where he is today, you have to go all the way back to his undergrad years at the University of Michigan where he graduated in 2004 with a Bachelor's in Business Administration. That path led him to working behind the scenes as a digital media executive.

So out of college, I spent six years working in the television and film industry. The first couple were for Jerry Bruckheimer, then the next few years were for another production company now called Whalerock.

Getting a Master's Degree in Business is not a requirement to become a "Master of Business," but it certainly doesn't hurt. Salter received his Master's degree from Northwestern University in 2013. Since then, Salter has served in various business roles for various companies, which has led him to starting his own business ventures. Salter is now the co-founder of Jupiter; a company determined to help its consumers beat scalp discomfort for good.

“Jupiter is the first elevated brand that targets discomfort, meaning irritation, scaling, and itchiness of the scalp. We are the first brand that looks good, smells good, and works really well. We are the new brand company on the scene trying to take down the perception that a dandruff shampoo needs to smell bad.”

It takes two to make a thing go right, and Salter joined forces with Jupiter co-founder Ross Goodhart to help bring his vision to light after his own personal struggles with finding a good dandruff product.

“Once I started putting it out there in the world that I was thinking about my next chapter, I just had friends telling me about other people working on interesting things. A mutual friend connected me with Ross, and we just knew we had complementary skills. After a year of kicking around some ideas, we decided to go ahead with Jupiter. I think people really underestimated the importance of having a good business partner. It’s like a marriage. In some cases, it’s even more intense than getting married because with your marriage partner; you don't see them until the end of the day, unfortunately. With your business partner, you are spending the bulk of the day with them in the trenches.”

Jupiter’s mission isn’t just to create nicely scented scalp relief products but also to destigmatize the narrative and embarrassment around scalp conditions.

“I started doing a bit of research and actually discovered that this is something that is super common. 50-70 percent of the world gets dandruff at some point in their lives, and 20 percent gets it chronically. I realized that if I’m having this problem and frustration with the products on the market, then other people must be as well. I looked into who owns the market share of this category, and low and behold there was a Goliath in Head and Shoulders, but I wasn’t afraid of being a David.”

A year later, Jupiter is building a reputation as one of the go-to scalp and dandruff companies. Its main objective is to educate consumers while providing them with a product that makes treatment easy and appealing. With a strong 2020, Salter is looking forward to an even better 2021. For more information on Salter’s journey and Jupiter, be sure to tune in to the full episode of Open Dialogue above, and be sure to use the promo code ONE37pm at the checkout for 10% off your next  purchase on the official Jupiter website.
