This is actually a tough one because I really like investing in BOTH of these quarterbacks. It truly depends on what your strategy is. If you want to make a safe play, there should be very little downside to Russell Wilson in the coming years. He already has a Super Bowl ring. He has little-to-no risk of any sort of off the field drama. He plays for one of the most stable organizations in professional sports.
When deciding who to invest in, the question should always be “who is more undervalued?” and not, “who is the better player?”.
With Lamar Jackson currently selling at such a dip, if you are a believer that Lamar Jackson can win playoff games not just this year, but in the coming years, he is a solid buy. If you think that Russell Wilson is primed to potentially win another Super Bowl and get his first MVP this year, he is also a solid buy.
To further illustrate why I love both quarterbacks at their current value, 2017 PSA 10 Patrick Mahomes Silver Prizm rookies currently sell for $5600 with a PSA population of 831. The PSA 9’s sell for $1299.36 with a PSA population of 1574. That sets the market cap for his PSA 10’s at $4.6 million and PSA 9’s at $2.045 million.
Should Patrick Mahomes market cap for his PSA 10’s be 10x Russell Wilson’s and over 7x what Lamar Jackson is? Probably not, but we will dive more into that debate in a future article.
With all of that said, my favorite play here is actually Russell Wilson "Towel Down" Prizm PSA 9‘s. If you examine the total PSA populations and their values, the numbers are much closer on the PSA 10’s where Wilson has a market cap of $470,375 while Jackson’s is $541.415. However, on the PSA 9’s, Wilson has a market cap of only $84,742.50, while Jackson’s is $389,518.05. It seems that with such a low population of PSA 9 Wilson’s (125) compared to Jackson’s (1843), that these cards are extremely undervalued.
Patrick Mahomes PSA 9 market cap is about half of his PSA 10 cap. Lamar’s PSA 9 market cap is actually a little more than half. So why exactly is Russell Wilson’s PSA 9 market cap less than 20% of his PSA 10 cap, especially with such a low population?
It makes no sense to me either.
