The year is 1991, and a 20-year-old artist by the name of Tupac Amaru Shakur aka Tupac emerges onto the music scene as a bright young rap talent. His debut, 2Pacalypse Now, hits shelves on November 12, 1991 led by the singles "Trapped," "Brenda's Got a Baby," and "If My Homie Calls." It's clear from the minute you hear the first track, "Young Black Male," that this young fella Tupac is something a little bit different than anybody that's ever been seen in the music industry before. Bringing a wit, charm, and lyrical prowess in the form of storytelling far beyond the twenty years he had lived up to that point, 2Pacalypse Now made a decent debut well received by critics that eventually would wind up being certified gold. The official start of what was to come.

In between 2Pacalypse Now and recording his sophomore project, Tupac continued building a name for himself in the entertainment industry with his now iconic roles in the films Juice (1992) and Poetic Justice (1993), along with some television appearances in popular sitcoms. That combined with the attention generated during his first album, really helped with officially transforming Pac into a budding household name in Hollywood. His second project, Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z, was released in February 1993, debuting at number 24 on the Billboard 200. The record spawned four single releases during its promo run, with the "Keep Ya Head Up" and "I Get Around" becoming the breakout hits.

If you didn't already know the name Tupac Shakur before the release of his second album, you definitely knew by the end of the promotion of the album, making Pac a name that was transitioning into a big star.

Ladies and gentlemen, one of the greatest of albums of all time—Me Against the World. Needless to say, there was a lot that occurred for Tupac on a personal level in between the two years of his sophomore release and Me Against the World. While those events are a different topic in of itself, they have to be mentioned because those events/incidents no doubt played a role in the direction of the album. In 1993, Tupac got into an altercation with Allen Hughes, the director of Menace II Society (1993), which lead to him spending roughly two weeks in jail. He also had two more incidents that involved an assault on another rapper and shooting two off-duty cops. Tupac and his associates were also accused of sexually assaulting a female fan along with some other charges (to which he denied), which led to him ultimately being convicted of two counts of sexual abuse for unwanted touching, to which he was sentenced to 18 months to 4.5 years in prison

The day before that respective trial, Tupac was shot and robbed while at a New York recording studio. No doubt all of these incidents back to back is what spawned the title of Tupac's third record Me Against the World, which was released on March 14, 1995 and led by the singles "Dear Mama," "So Many Tears," and "Temptations." Really honing in on themes that had made him both such a controversial and popular artist like strong political statements, issues with law enforcement, and growing up as young Black male in America, Me Against the World debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. In the years after its release, the album has been certified double platinum in the RIAA, and officially listed as one of the Definitive 200 Albums of All Time by the National Association of Recording Merchandisers (NARM).

Unfortunately, Tupac's fourth studio album All Eyez on Me is the final of his releases before his untimely death in September 1996. Similar to his previous record, the name of the album came from some of the recent events that had transpired in Tupac's life up to that point, with the artist telling Bill Bellamy in a December 1995 interview:

"It's called All Eyez on Me. That's how I feel it is. I got the police watching me, the Feds. I got the females that want to charge me with false charges and sue me and all that. I got the females that like me. I got the jealous homeboys and I got the homies that roll with me. Everybody's looking to see what I'mma do now so All Eyez on Me."

All Eyez on Me spawned the hit records "California Love," "2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted," "How Do You Want It," and "I Ain't Mad at Cha," with the album grabbing the top spot on the US Billboard 200 and the US Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums charts. The record is also considered one of the best of all-time by critics, and was officially certified diamond in 2014.

As we mentioned earlier, in the aftermath of his passing, Tupac has gone on to have an incredibly successful posthumous career, starting with The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory, which was released almost two months after his death under his stage moniker Makaveli. The project was actually recorded in full roughly a month or two before Tupac's death, as it was originally intended to be released as a mixtape. Led by the singles "Toss It Up," "To Live & Die in L.A., and " "Hail Mary, " the record centered around darker themes along with many elements of the continued East Coast/West Coast battle that was happening around that time (and yes that included diss tracks).

The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory wound up reaching the top spot on the Billboard 200, selling over 600k its first week.

Roughly a year later, Pac's second posthumous release R U Still Down? (Remember Me) hit shelves on November 25, 1997. The album consisted of material that was recorded in between the years 1992 - 1994 that were either unreleased of barely heard during that time period, and it was much appreciated by the Tupac fanbase as it topped the US R&B charts and sold over 500k in its first week. "Do for Love" was the hit single off R U Still Down? (Remember Me) , becoming a top ten and twenty hit on certain charts while selling over 500,000 copies. Folks, this was the pre-streaming era—meaning that over 500,000 people physically went out to a record store (or another place where music is sold) and purchased the actual single "Do for Love," which is quite impressive for a posthumous artist.

It would be two more years before getting another posthumous releases from the Tupac estate, but the wait was worth it with 1999's Still I Rise, which was a collaboration and his group the Outlawz (which he put together in December 1995 upon signing with Death Row Records). Consisting of previously unreleased material that the group recorded, the album was led by the track "Baby Don't Cry (Keep Ya Head Up II)," and certified platinum by the RIAA with over 400k sold.

In March 2001, Until the End of Time hit shelves as a collaboration between Amaru Records and Death Row Records. Featuring the singles "Happy Home," "Until the End of Time," and "Letter 2 My Unborn," Until the End of Time was mostly remixes of unreleased material, which was an interesting take then just releasing the previously unheard of tracks as it. Once again, Tupac was successful with yet another posthumous release as the record debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200. Not only that, Until the End of Time has been certified quadruple platinum.

Promoted by "Thug Mansion" and "Still Ballin" as the two singles, Better Dayz was released on November 26, 2002, and is the last of Tupac's records to be a double album. Featuring appearances with big names such as Mya, Ron Isley, Tyrese and more, Better Dayz was another go-round of remixed unreleased material. While Thug Mansion" and "Still Ballin" were chosen as the defining singles from the record, some of our favorites outside of that are the tracks "Fuck Em All," "Street Fame," the "FairXchange Remix" featuring Mya. Guess what? Better Dayz debuted in the top five of the US Billboard 200, which gave Pac his eighth top-ten album.

Produced by Eminem, Loyal to the Game was released on December 14, 2004 with a number one debut on the US Billboard 200. Led by the singles "Thugs Get Lonely Too," and "Ghetto Gospel," the album featured G-Unit, Nate Dogg, and Jadakiss amongst others, and was heavily produced in what can only be described as "Eminem style" in terms of the production techniques, mixing, and styling. Loyal to the Game was certified platinum by the RIAA shortly after its release.

As of this writing, 2006's Pac's Life is the final posthumous album in Tupac's catalog. Released in November 2006 in commemoration of the tenth anniversary of his passing, Pac's Life took on the same approach as its predecessors in terms of remixing unreleased tracks, featuring the likes of Ashanti, Keyshia Cole, T.I., Snoop Dogg, Chamillionaire, and more as additional artists that contributed to the project. Pac's Life received some criticism from fans and music critics in terms of sounding too overproduced and "modern," but despite the complaints in that regard, the record debuted at the ninth spot on the US Billboard 200.
