Exploring the Shanghai Streetwear Landscape

Considered to be one of the best streetwear shops in Shanghai, DOE Shanghai is rapidly expanding as one of the top places to shop both established and emerging designers. Located in the Jing’an District (one of the central districts of Shanghai), DOE has a large selection of sneakers, hats, hoodies, joggers, and just about anything else you can think of.

In addition to housing a variety of brands, DOE also has their own signature line which you can get a glimpse of via their Instagram. Definitely one to check out either online or in-person.

INNERSECT is actually a streetwear fashion project that is the place “Where Culture Happens.” Established in 2022, INNERSECT works with tons of brands, using their platform as a place to unite cultural trailblazers and industry leaders from all over the world. The 2021 edition featured Fear of God founder Jerry Lorenzo as a co-curator for the event, with the main theme being “balance.” Hopefully INNERSECT can make a comeback in 2023, as there has been a rise just in this past year alone in rising Shanghai designers and collaborations.

The roots of Warrior 1927 dates all the way back to the 1930s, with the debut of their signature low top sneaker. Known for its elaborate colorways, comfort, and durability, you could spot Warrior 27s on just about anybody who was anybody, from athletes, to politicians, and businessmen both rich and poor. The WB-1 iteration was also extremely popular amongst basketball players in the 70s, and since then the brand has only evolved.

At the moment, there’s roughly 50 sneakers to choose from on their website, and Warrior 27 has since expanded to also include merchandise such as t-shirts, hats, and pants, which is pretty neat.

Element is another dope store to check out in Shanghai. The cool thing about Element is that it specializes in taking men’s fashion from Japanese designer brands, making it unique in that regard. The Zhongshan location is right in the middle of Changning District, and also has a nice little cafe and plant shop, making the vibes immaculate.

Known for their colorful cartoon designs and their incredible quality, TYAKASHA already has collabs with major athletic brands such as Puma and New Balance on their resume. If you are looking for street clothing with unique designs and patterns, then TYAKASHA is definitely the way to go.

Honing in on bridging the gap between consumers and brands, Harbook+ carries independent designers, while also putting their attention on those who love luxury style. Among the brands in the Harbook+ plus store are Freitag, Crash Baggage, Intrusion, and Kaitahoku, all of whom are very different from one another which is a neat concept.

We got a quick chat with Hasani to get the scoop on his personal style and the Shanghai scene. Here's what he had to say:

Fashion as a whole: "Fashion is who we are to the world before we use words to introduce ourselves."

My style: "My style is heavily Influenced by Japanese design. I enjoy pleats, wide silhouettes, and wear complimentary colors often. My favorite designer is Issey Miyake"

Fashion in Shanghai: "The people of Shanghai channel an individualism through their style that is rare. A stroll through the streets of Shanghai challenges anyone to rethink the way they approach fashion and the utility of clothing."
