Jesus Revolution is an Exploration of 1970s Hippie Fashion

Yes we know that Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantmania came out just a few days ago, and we also know that Creed III is about to come out next week, but there’s a new movie out that not only looks to be pretty good, but also very fashion forward. If you haven’t heard, Jesus Revolution is in theaters as of yesterday, and it’s all about 1970 hippies. If you recall, back in October we did a Fashion on Film centered around hippie and western fashion, doing a deep dive into the trends of that era. So with Jesus Revolution being a period piece centered during that time, we thought that it would be fun to take a look at the fashion of the film. Certain elements of 70s fashion are starting to make a comeback, so the timing is quite perfect if you ask us. Let’s take a look.

The hippie movement started towards the end of the 1960s, continuing on into the 1970s. It was a very vibrant, colorful and liberal era full of self expression through clothing that promoted peace, love, and healing. Some of the themes in 70s womens fashion included lots of tye-dye, bell bottoms, gauchos, maxi dresses, along with flared pants which were oftentimes accompanied by belly tops and halters. Tunics were also very popular during this time that were equally colorful. And of course we can’t forget the mini skirts and dresses with bell sleeves.

As for the men, if you want a clear example of how guys who were hippies dressed back then, all you have to do is look at a picture of John Lennon. The fellas wore loose Henley shirts, lots of mixed and geometric designs, lace-up shirts, and trousers. It was also very common for hippies to wear tie dye clothes and bandanas, along with minimalistic jewelry and accessories that were sometimes handmade.
