Tracking Timothée Chalamet’s Style Evolution

Everyone has been banging on about Jonah Hill being a “slob-ebrity” style icon because he tucked a basketball jersey into black dress pants? OK. Get those RTs, Four Pins.

But you want to see a real style evolution? Look no further than Timothée Chalamet, stone fruit patriarch, who is steering Chalamania into serious style territory with his latest outfits. It’s been a long, winding yellow brick road from the red carpet looks he was pulling in January 2013. At the Screen Actors Guild Awards pre-party, Timbo was mugging to the camera without realizing he had ketchup or something on his face. The black button-up is classic but he paired it with a grandma’s-settee patterned tie draped around his neck like a failed noose.

From there, he moved through liminal fashion space and began really experimenting with his style. This Cabin in the Woods look, for example.

Or this dizzying floral print puffer jacket paired with a zip-up vest and some white noise-lookin’ sweats.

OK last one before the jump: These galaxy pants worn to the premiere of Lars von Trier’s Nymphomaniac. What were you thinking, Chalamet? This look did not age well.

He’s previously said that he doesn’t feel the need to recruit professional help. "I'm such a fan boy. [Being involved] with fashion has been really fun, just as a fan. I don't want to work with a stylist or anything,” he said in an interview with Frank Ocean for VMAN.

It was on Feb. 13 of last year, at the Berlinale International Film Festival in Berlin, when everything changed—the Timo-turning point.

Damn, Timmy. He wore a head-to-toe Haider Ackermann Fall 2017 look, keeping the rubberneckers occupied with a Berluti purple suede leather jacket and Berluti black boots. Despite his aversion to working with a stylist, it’s difficult to believe that Chalamet himself was the mastermind behind this style upgrade.

Since then, he's rocked a Rolodex of name brands. His favorites are Calvin Klein 205 W39 NYC, Berluti and Haider Ackermann. He also loves a fun cap.

The Toronto International Film Festival just wrapped and bequeathed us with new Chala-content. And with a mix of casual and red carpet get-ups, it has become clear that Chalamet has wrested the crown away from Hill as our new style king. In fact, a fairly new but under-the-radar account has sprung up to identify all of his sartorial moves. Enter @readytimmywear (a play on ready-to-wear), which has been doing Gawd’s werk uncovering which brands Chalamet has christened as worth buying.

From the purple suede jacket onward, the Instagram account RTW (@readytimmywear) has kept Chalamet's outfit choices locked, stocked and barrelled.

"He's close with Haider Ackermann, so when Ackermann was the creative director of Berluti, Timothée often wore Berluti," RTW told ONE37pm. "Now that Haider Ackermann is not with Berluti anymore, he dresses Timothée with items from his namesake brand, Haider Ackermann. ... There's a tendency for Timothée to wear certain brands for several times. I once spotted him wearing Thom Browne for the first time, and sure enough, for several times after that he wore Thom Browne. Another example, he was spotted arriving in Toronto for TIFF in an Alexander McQueen hoodie, and sure enough, for a couple of TIFF interviews he wore Alexander McQueen."

But since he was mostly treading the red carpet during promo for Call Me By Your Name, he wasn’t exactly an accessible style inspiration. Who could afford that Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Tribute Duoface? This past summer was a drought, as Chalamet had no major releases (Hot Summer Nights was filmed prior to CMBYN and cheekily released once his bubble of fame popped).

However, we have entered a new era. Last week, Chalamet sported a McQueen V-neck sweater ($990), a pair of A.P.C. techno sneakers ($310) and—an Italian villa necessity—Hotsox’s Botticelli's Birth of Venus Crew Socks ($5.99). It was a casual power move.

As he flew out of Canada, he met Ryan Gosling at the airport. He took the opportunity to promo Variety magazine accompanied by a fitted Plan B sweatshirt.

As the run-up to awards season officially begins (Venice Film Festival, which started in late August, is widely considered the kick-off), Chalamet will be hustling to promote A Beautiful Boy until we're sick of him. Just kidding, that's not possible. Either way, he has made a Chala-bid for the #fitwatch hashtag. Your move, Four Pins. Let the style adventures begin.
