We wouldn’t have the massive film industry of today without the talented filmmakers, writers, actors and actresses that paved the way over one hundred years ago. While you probably already know what a silent film is/was, its technical definition is “movies without synchronized sound and dialogue with music being played to accompany the action.” Of course, this was because the technology didn’t exist at the time for dialogue to be properly recorded in film (which didn’t come around until the end of the 1920s with the official introduction of “talkies"). The oldest known silent film is a short called Roundhay Garden Scene, which was created by inventor Louis Le Prince in Yorkshire England and released on October 14th, 1888.
The silent film era ran from the 1890s to the late 1920s, and today we’ll be taking a look at the best silent films of the era to help get you started (or just simply for your enjoyment).
