Should You See 'The Irishman' in Theaters?

Move over, Siskel and Ebert. It’s Oscar season, and there’s a new movie-review duo in town. That’s right, your favorite hype hosts, Ryan Haney and Michael Saintil, are back and better than ever. In this episode of Hype Corral, they’re taking on the hottest upcoming releases of 2019. From Star Wars to A24’s Uncut Gems, there’s a lot to look forward to on-screen in this year’s final months. Haney and Saintil share their takes below.

Like almost everyone, the hype hosts are certainly excited for the upcoming Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Nonetheless, Haney is a little too stoked for the potential demise of one of the series’ much-adored droids, C-3PO. Despite maniacally wishing harm upon our hesitant hero, Haney and Saintil are still looking forward to seeing the saga come to an end.

Our beloved hosts turn to the critically acclaimed Martin Scorcese flick, The Irishman, which is already in theaters and soon to be released on Netflix. The film, which clocks in at 210 minutes long, is one of the most ambitious mob films of all time, as it is the first to feature three of the greatest actors of the genre side by side: Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci and Al Pacino. And although we’re all excited to watch the lengthy picture, Haney and Saintil can’t help but note the potential ramifications of the films’ de-aging technology. Will a digitally rendered young De Niro soon be the star of every upcoming release? We’re looking at you, CGI James Dean. 

The movie reviewers follow their Scorcese talk with a discussion of A24’s long-awaited Uncut Gems, starring Adam Sandler. Featuring both Kevin Garnett and The Weeknd as themselves, the movie boasts an unorthodox, but intriguing cast.
